BASIC is an independent, non-profit think tank working to safeguard humanity and the Earth's ecosystem from nuclear risks and interconnected security threats for generations to come. We are looking for two additional trustees.

What will you be doing?

BASIC is seeking two new trustees:

1) An expert in fundraising, philanthropy, and revenue generation.

2) A lawyer or legal expert with professional knowledge and experience of UK charity law.

BASIC's board of trustees comprises a number of experts in international nuclear policy and strategy. We are looking to strengthen its membership, by further building the group of trustees with expertise in managing organisations and charity governance.

The board meets approximately 4 times a year, exclusively virtually over the past three years. Current board members reside in the UK, the US, Austria, and Ireland, so in-person attendance at board meetings is not required.

In total, individual board members spend between 4 hours to two days per quarter on average fulfilling trustee responsibilities.

There may be additional ad-hoc meetings to address any short-term critical issues that arise, and opportunities to take on additional roles and responsibilities of governance if you are interested and have available time.

What are we looking
for?

Necessary requirements are:

– strong committment to BASIC's mission and vision (see website for BASIC / British American Security Information Council)

– relevant skills and experience (i.e., fundraising / revenue generation expertise or legal expertise)

– collaborative and collegial style

– willingness to commit time and experitise

BASIC is recognised in our field as a leader in promoting diversity across our staff and board. BASIC is a Gender Champion in Nuclear Policyand a member organisation of Women of Colour Advancing Peace, Security and Conflict (WCAPS).

What difference will you make?

The war in Ukraine shows the critical importance of BASIC's work in minimising the chances of the use of nuclear weapons. BASIC’s work is well respected in the international relations sector.

Your fundraising experience will help ensure BASIC has the resources needed to continue its work. You will advise the Executive Director and the board on appropriate fundraising strategies. See BASIC’s website for information about our current funders.

Your legal experience will help ensure that BASIC operates in compliance with UK law and adopts best practices.
