John’s Story

Lisburn Supported Living Service, Lisburn

John is 25 years of age – with Praxis since 2015

“Hi everyone, my name is John.

I am 25 years old. I live with Autism, Severe Learning Disability and mental health difficulties.  I regularly hear voices in my head which I can struggle with, as they sometimes say nasty things about me which make me anxious and sad.

I have been living in Praxis Care supported accommodation since 2015.  I moved to my current home in 2018.  I have the support of three staff at all times when I am at home and I need  four people to support me when I go on outings in the community which I love to do and really enjoy with my teams.

My day usually begins between 8am and 9am when I get up.  I have a very specific morning routine and like to do things at my own pace.  Sometimes my routines can take longer than other times.  My staff support me via my detailed  Positive Behaviour Support Plan which is very specific to my needs and helps my team understand me and my needs.

I really enjoy listening to music throughout the day.  Sometimes I like to dance and I really like it when staff dance with me when I’m listening to music.  I really enjoy going out on trips into the community, visiting locations that I know. I like drawing, doing quizzes with staff and having them read me stories. If I’m going on an outing or I have somebody coming to visit me, I like staff to provide me with a social story which fully explains what is happening. This helps to reduce my anxiety.

Some days the voices that I hear can become very difficult for me to cope with and as a result I can become anxious.  I like staff to provide me with a lot of reassurance throughout the day especially on the days that I am quite anxious.

If I am having a difficult day, this might show through my behaviour. Sometimes I might engage in self-injury or behaviours that challenge towards those who are supporting me at that time. On days like this it is very important that staff support me via my robust Positive Behaviour Support Plan.  This includes verbal redirection and perhaps physical redirection as is agreed with my multidisciplinary team. Sometimes I like staff to sit with me during these times, other times staff may need to sit with me to stop me from hurting myself.

I don’t cope well with lots of new faces; I would love a consistent team to support me. My team will get individualised specific training, provided by a clinical multi-disciplinary team, to help me reach my potential and continue to have more good days.

Are you a caring, compassionate and patient person who enjoys being part of a team that can provide me with the consistency and reliability I need when I am having a tough time and struggling day to day? Will you help me to continue to live in my home in the community I love with a team that are invaluable to me?”
