Islington Mind – Outcome LGBTIQ+ project volunteers

About the role

Outcome is the LGBTIQ+ specialist service of Islington Mind, offering support to LGBTIQ+ people who experience mental distress within Islington and across London. This is our website: https://www.islingtonmind.org.uk/our-services/outcome/and this is our twitter: https://twitter.com/outcomelgbtiq

We are open every Tuesday online and in-person at our day centre in Crouch Hill. We offer a safe and supportive therapeutic drop-in for LGBTIQ+ people, as well as activities including art, yoga, walking group, running group, inclusive gender-specific groups, and creative writing. We are also open on Wednesdays for a specific project supporting LGTBIQ+ people seeking asylum or who are refugees. In this space, we offer a drop-in as well as more intensive mental health and practical support.

We are offering volunteering placements on Tuesdays or Wednesdays (or both) to candidates who identify as members of the LGBTIQ+ community. Regular supervision as well as training opportunities will be provided. Volunteers will join a vibrant, hard-working, and enthusiastic team and will undertake a variety of activities based on their interests and experience, including therapeutically socialising with clients in the drop-in space, helping to cook, facilitating activities, helping with house meetings, administrative support, and fundraising research, plus many more. Outcome is a hybrid service and volunteers will be expected to attend in person every week, supporting both the drop-in spaces online and in person.

Candidates need to be able to commit to at least 12 months volunteering one day a week with us (in addition to around 1-2 months for DBS check and induction). Candidates should have an interest in supporting a mental health-focused project, working within a client-led setting to deliver activities, and helping clients who experience mental distress in group settings. Previous experience working with vulnerable adults is not necessary; a keenness to learn is essential!

A free lunch (meat and vegetarian options) is provided and travel within London is reimbursed up to £10.
