This is a whole time NHS vacancy for an International Training Fellow whose principal duties will be for a 12 month period in the Critical Care Unit at University Hospital Aintree. This post would suit an individual approaching the end of training in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) who desires training and experience in a busy UK NHS unit or post Completion of Training in ICM or anaesthesia and wishing to gain further experience before embarking on a consultant post with ICM sessions. The successful applicant will work under Consultant supervision at a level best matched to their learning needs and experience. They will become part of a dynamic team passionate about delivering the best patient care. There are many opportunities to be involved with teaching, clinical governance, research and audit.
The post is approved by the Royal College of Anaesthesia Global Fellowship Scheme for applicants from High Income Countries and sponsorship for GMC registration will be provided by the college.
Main duties of the job
This is a training post in Intensive Care Medicine, recognised and approved by the Regional Advisor, Dean of Health Education England North-West and the Royal College of Anaesthesia.
The successful candidate will
- Share the responsibility for the assessment, resuscitation and treatment of all patients referred to the Critical Care Unit, working as part of a team with the on-call ICU consultant.
- Be expected to see patients in the Emergency Department, theatre recovery and the wards following referral from colleagues in other specialities.
- Work alongside our trainees on a full shift rota. This is a full shift rota and the successful candidate will be required to be resident in the hospital during the working hours allocated to them on the rota
- Be part of medical emergency team
- Take responsibility for ensuring his/her ongoing medical education as agreed at Directorate level.
- Share the responsibility for direct clinical supervision and teaching of the trainee staff, nurses and medical students.
There will be the opportunity to be allocated non-clinical days, where you can pursue areas of interest to be planned with an Educational Supervisor on appointment. These include, but are not limited to; FICE accreditation, major trauma experience, research and quality improvement, teaching and simulation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- Maintain good clinical records and effective working relationships with medical, nursing and allied healthcare professionals on the critical care team.
- Take an active role in the departmental clinical governance activity
- Give priority to the duties of the post at all times
- Be allocated an Educational Supervisor and we will enable regular appraisal and support the development of a learning plan and portfolio

- The departments offer regular weekly educational meetings including audit meetings and M&M meetings

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MB ChB or equivalent
- Post-graduate qualification in relevant specialty (FRCA, MRCP, MCEM or equivalent recognised by RCOA and verifiable by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates and recognised by a university or health authority in the country of operation)
- Certificate of Advanced Life Support (or other accredited life support course)
Desirable criteria
- FFICM or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 4 of last 5 years in Anaesthesia/ICM training outside of UK/EU
- Minimum duration of training pathway leading to post graduate qualification of 2 years with evidence of curriculum followed
- 6 months experience in ICM at a registrar level
Desirable criteria
- 6 months experience in Acute Medicine /Emergency Medicine
- Involvement in audit / quality improvement work / research
- Involvement in teaching
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Independently competent in organ support (mechanical ventilation, vasopressor /inotrope manipulation, Renal replacement therapy)
Desirable criteria
- Attendance at meetings or courses related to ICM
- Presentations relating to ICM
- Academic achievement (publications, prizes etc)
Skills
Essential criteria
- Independently competent in procedures related to Critical Care (endotracheal intubation, arterial line and CVC insertion with US guidance, bronchoscopy, insertion of intercostal drains)
- Clear written and verbal communication, demonstrating knowledge of English (IELTS/OET unless exempt as being a national of a country where English is a first or native language. Must not have previously failed PLAB)
- Success as a team worker sensitive to needs of other colleagues and patients
- Intra and Inter hospital transfer experience
Other
Essential criteria
- Eligible to work in the UK on a tier 2 skilled worker visa
- Evidence of living in a High Income Country (as per the World Bank definition)
- Attitudes consistent with GMC guidelines and Trust values
- Provide evidence of good standing with the applicant’s local Medical Regulatory Council
