Warwick School
Full-time
Summary
An inspirational and committed teacher is required to lead the English Department from September 2023. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a talented department.
Detail
The successful candidate will be able to teach to Oxbridge level and will have excellent people-management skills.
There are nine members of staff working in the English Department and this is a group of dedicated and enthusiastic professionals who are keen to drive creativity and academic rigour in the school. Housed in the Thornton building, the team share a large work room with a dedicated office space for the Head of English. The majority of teachers have their own classrooms that are fully equipped with an interactive screen and laptop that can cast to the board. On the same floor there is a dedicated room for our sixth form students to work and research using appropriate academic resources. Independent learning is at the heart of what we do and as such we have an impressive array of extra-curricular activities. Book clubs, creative writing groups and debating teams are offered to every year group and we have a publication, The WordsWorth dedicated to students’ work. We are extremely fortunate to have the RSC and the Bridge House Theatre on our doorstep, both of which enable us to offer regular theatre trips. We try also to widen the cultural experiences of the boys with literary dinners, regular speakers and trips to ‘The Globe’ and other London theatres. Where possible we work with King’s High School in arranging our extra-curricular provision to encourage healthy debate between the two schools.
Currently boys take the CIE IGCSE English and English Literature exam for GCSE and the OCR Specification is taught for A level Literature. We also teach the A Level Edexcel English Language course and have a reasonable uptake for both A levels.
Results are consistently impressive with around half the cohort achieving 8s or 9s at Year 11 and around a third achieving A*s at A level English Literature. The majority achieve A* to B in A level English Language.
