Deputy Director: Electron Microscopy Facility

As Deputy Director in the Electron Microscopy Facility, you will be responsible for the scientific oversight of the Astbury Biostructure Laboratory Electron Microscopy Facility; you will develop new methods to advance the capabilities of current biological imaging and being responsible for all training and equipment utilisation. You will develop the strategic direction of the Facility in conjunction with the Academic Director. You will ensure that instrumentation in the Astbury Biostructure Laboratory/Faculty of Biological Sciences EM unit is utilised to maximum effect, supporting a program of world leading research. Working with the Director, you will identify requirements and secure the funding needed to keep the facility at the forefront of structural biology globally, thereby ensuring its long-term scientific and financial sustainability.
The post holder will be a senior leader within a lively and intellectually stimulating research community, which performs to the highest international levels in research and publications. You will lead the team responsible for the provision of outstanding technical and scientific support to users of the EM Facility from across the University and beyond, assisting with experimental design and execution, supporting research publications. You will represent the cryoEM facility and University of Leeds nationally and internationally (e.g. at conferences, training courses and advisory boards), and pursue appropriate technical and methodological publications in peer-reviewed journals, with the aim of being returnable in future UK REF exercises. You will be responsible for establishing Leeds as a global leader in the training of users in cryoEM, cryoET and correlative microscopy techniques, including developing future grant applications to fund external training programmes. You will identify emerging opportunities within electron microscopy and exploit them to maximise the success of the facility, and attracting external use.
