Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Anaesthetist with a General Interest, based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. Applicants with a specialty interest or experience in perioperative medicine are particularly encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join an expanding, innovative and dynamic department of 85 Consultants, 50 Trainees/Clinical Fellows and 16 Senior Clinical Fellows, providing anaesthetic services in this thriving, modern teaching hospital. 

Applicants should be fully registered with the GMC and have a CCT (or equivalent) in Anaesthesia or be within six months of receiving a CCT at the time of interview. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.

As part of our commitment to supporting the medical workforce in the part they play in delivering an excellent caring service to patients, all newly appointed Consultants attend our modified Consultant Development programme within a year of joining the Trust. Leadership is a key requirement of doctors’ professional work, and this innovative programme is designed to support Consultants to hone the leadership and management skills they need to succeed at CUH.

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013). Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Addenbrooke’s not only provides a broad range of medical services for people living in the Cambridge area but is also a regional/supra-regional referral centre for a number of specialties including cancer surgery, neurosurgery, transplantation, plastic surgery, vascular surgery and paediatrics. As a world-renowned teaching hospital, there is unparalleled capacity for teaching and research including involvement in the high fidelity simulation centre, and research projects within the department as well as the wider biomedical campus. 

The successful candidate will join a team of 20 General Anaesthetists, who cover a wide range of specialties within general anaesthesia. Together the group support on call cover of general adult anaesthesia and anaesthetic support of other departments in the hospital. The group is also involved in our post-operative care unit for patients who have undergone major and complex surgery.
